Dr. Bishal Gyawali, MD, PhD, FASCO, is a physician-scientist, medical oncologist, and Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology and the Department of Division of Cancer Care and Epidemiology, in Queen's University at Queen’s University. Known internationally for his work in global oncology, evidence-based medicine, and health policy, Dr. Gyawali combines clinical practice with a bold research agenda aimed at making cancer care more equitable, affordable, and effective.
He earned his medical degree from the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University in Nepal, completed his PhD in medical science at Nagoya University, Japan, and undertook a fellowship in cancer policy at Harvard University. His training reflects a truly global perspective, which he brings to his current academic and clinical work in Canada and beyond.
He is a committed educator whose work emphasizes critical thinking, cost-conscious care, and the evaluation of evidence in oncology. He is passionate about mentoring medical students, residents, and early-career oncologists, especially those from low- and middle-income countries. His teaching emphasizes the importance of scientific skepticism and the responsible use of healthcare resources. He regularly leads workshops and gives invited lectures on clinical trial design, cancer policy, and global disparities in oncology education.
Clinically, he specializes in the treatment of breast cancer and genitourinary cancers. His approach is rooted in evidence-based practice and shared decision-making. He is known for advocating for treatment strategies that balance efficacy with quality of life and patient values. At Kingston Health Sciences Centre, he works closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver compassionate, personalized cancer care.
His research covers global oncology, cancer drug development, health economics, clinical trial design, and access to cancer care. He is a prominent voice in the international oncology community, calling for higher standards in clinical research, improved regulatory practices, and better access to affordable cancer treatments.
He has published extensively in high-impact journals such as The Lancet Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, and BMJ. His work is often cited in discussions about value-based cancer care, and he serves on multiple editorial boards and international committees, including ASCO’s Value in Cancer Care Task Force.
